Schön dass ihr es auch dieses Jahr wieder zum mittlerweile vierten Zinefest Berlin geschafft habt – trotz Hürden wie arbeitskampfbedingten Zugausfällen und dem symbolischen Wiederaufbau und des symbolischen Wiedereinreißens einer historischen Grenze.
Hier nun unsere Zusammenfassung des Wochenendes, die ihr auch gerne ergänzen könnt: entweder in den Kommentaren oder per Email an contact@zinefestberlin.com.
Das Wochenende war wieder überwältigend, die Atmosphäre super angenehm und euer Feedback auf die Workshops und Vorträge begeistert. Es wurden Freundschaften geschlossen, Wissen geteilt, viele von euch haben Zines getauscht und gelesen, rumgehangen und gegessen. Wir sind mehr als zufrieden, trotz einer kleineren Organisator_innengruppe das vierte erfolgreiche Zinefest gehabt zu haben.
Die gute Nachricht zuerst: Wir konnten dank eurer großzügigen Spenden wieder alle unsere Kosten decken und mit Riseup und dem Stressfaktor Projekte unterstützen, ohne die das Zinefest deutlich schwieriger zu machen wäre. Womit wir auch schon beim leidigen Thema Geld sind. Um ausreichende Einnahmen zu garantieren, mussten wir dieses Jahr von den Tischen um einen Mindestbeitrag von 5 Euro bitten. Wir fanden den Betrag eigentlich okay (und wenn ihr eure Zines umsonst verteilt, müsst ihr natürlich auch für euren Tisch nichts zahlen) aber für einige Zinesters und Distros war dies trotzdem bereits die Schmerzgrenze. Wir wissen noch nicht wie wir in Zukunft damit umgehen aber hier ein paar Gedanken und Ideen dazu:
Wenn ihr extra von weit weg anreist, denkt bitte auch an die Umwelt und daran, dass nicht garantiert ist, dass ihr eure Reisekosten wieder reinkriegt. Vielleicht lohnt sich ein ganzer Kofferraum Hefte ja doch nicht und ein Rucksack voller Zines zum rumlaufen und tauschen würde auch reichen? Auch ohne eigenen Tisch gibt es Möglichkeiten am Zinefest teilzunehmen.
Wenn ihr in Berlin wohnt und in den Monaten vorher beim Organisieren helfen könnt, müsst ihr natürlich nichts für euren Tisch zahlen. Um Organisator_in zu werden, schreibt uns eine Email.
Good artists copy, great artists steal
Leider scheint es beim Open Table und der Zine-Bibliothek Missverständnisse gegeben zu haben: Dieses Jahr wurden sehr viele Zines vom Open Table geklaut. Manche davon tauchten später in der Bibliothek, die uns das Archiv der Jugendkulturen zur Verfügung gestellt hat, wieder auf. Das tut uns sehr leid für alle, die ihre Zines verloren haben. Wenn ihr noch welche vermisst, schreibt uns am besten an volunteers@zinefestberlin.com um zu fragen, ob wir die Hefte oder das Geld vielleicht noch gefunden haben.
Im nächsten Jahr wollen wir ein paar Dinge deutlicher machen: Nicht alle Zines sind umsonst, auch wenn ihr am Eingang gespendet habt. Die Spendendose am Eingang ist für die Kosten der Veranstaltung, also Material, Miete, Serverkosten, Getränke, Benzin, Workshops, Druckkosten. Wenn ihr ein Zine haben wollt, fragt bitte immer die Person(en) hinter dem Tisch, was sie dafür haben wollen.
Und: Der Open Table gehört nicht zur Bibliothek, auch wenn er genauso gemischt aussieht.
Wir gehen, wie ihr seht, davon aus dass die verschwundenen Zines ein Versehen waren. Solltet ihr absichtlich aus politischen oder anderen Gründen Hefte geklaut haben, freuen wir uns über Bekenner_innenschreiben an contact@zinefestberlin.com.
Eine diebstahlsichere und noch dazu besondere Möglichkeit sind selbstgemachte Alternative zum Open Table wie beispielsweise dieses Jahr die beiden Bauchläden. Damit könnt ihr auch ohne eigenen Tisch am Zinefest teilnehmen und habt ihre Zines die ganze Zeit im Blick!
Smells like zine spirit
Wir freuen uns, dass das Zinefest den meisten von euch so viel Spaß gemacht hat. Aus den hinteren Zine-Räumen gab es aber auch Unzufriedenheit: So wurde uns berichtet, dass die Räume gestunken haben, ungemütlich waren und zu wenig besucht wurden. Um das zu verbessern könnten wir uns beispielsweise ein paar gemütliche Sitzgelegenheiten auch in den hinteren Räumen vorstellen, statt nur auf der “Bühne”. Eine geniale Maßnahme gegen schlechte Luft wäre, ab und zu mal kurz die Fenster zu öffnen.
Um eure Räume so gemütlich wie möglich zu machen, bringt nächstes Jahr am besten auch Kissen, Lampen oder Teppiche mit. Wir fangen jedes Jahr schon am Freitag Abend mit dem Aufbau an und alle sind eingeladen, mitzumachen!
Eine weitere Idee, über die wir schon länger nachgedacht haben, wären thematisch ausgewählte Tische in den einzelnen Räumen: Dann hättet ihr mit euren Tisch-Nachbar_innen möglicherweise mehr gemeinsam und Besucher_innen könnten gezielt in Räume, die sie besonders interessieren. Was haltet ihr von der Idee oder habt ihr vielleicht noch weitere? Schickt uns eure Vorschläge!
Wir hoffen, diese kleinen Pannen waren nicht zu unangenehm für euch und danken euch allen, dass ihr da wart und das Fest zu dem gemacht habt, was es war.

Great, that you could make it to the fourth Zinefest Berlin, despite labour dispute-related train cancellations and symbolically reconstructed and redemolished historical boarders.
Here’s our recap of the weekend which you should feel free to add to, using the comment-section or an e-mail to contact@zinefestberlin.com.
Overall we had a packed-out weekend, and lots of great feedback about the workshops and the cozy environment. Connections were made, knowledge was shared, lots of people were happy to trade zines, and all the tasty food and snacks were gobbled up! We are super happy to have had a successful 4th zinefest in a row, despite our smaller organizing group this year. We appreciate every comment we receive, positive or negative, and we’d like to address a few points as to how to make zinefest better next year.
Good news first: due to your generous donations we were able to break even financially and support Riseup and the Stressfaktor, two projects without which zinefest would be way harder to organize. Which leads us to the money-topic. To guarantee sufficient income, this year we had to ask every table for a minimal fee of 5 Euros. We found that amount quite reasonable (and if you give away your zines for free, of course you don’t have to pay anything for your table) but for some zinesters and distros we already reached the threshold. We don’t yet know how to deal with that in the future but here are some thoughts and ideas:
If you are traveling a long distance please think about the environment and the fact that it is not guaranteed that you will re-earn your traveling costs. Maybe a whole trunk filled to the brim with zines might not be profitable, and a backpack of zines to walk around and trade with might be enough? Even without your own table there are possibilities to participate at the fest and get your zines to zinelovers.
If you live in Berlin and help organizing in the months before the fest, of course you don’t have to pay for your table. Write us some mail to become an organizer!
Good Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal
Unfortunately, there have been some misconceptions at the open zinetable and the zine-library this year. A lot of zines have been snitched from the open table. Some of them were found later at the library, which the “Archiv der Jugendkulturen” provided again this year. We are very sorry for anyone who’s missing zines. If you are among those people, you can ask about your zines or money via volunteers@zinefestberlin.com.
Next year we want to make some points more clear: Not all the zines are for free, even if you already donated at the entrance. These donation boxes cover our costs, like rent for the room, material, drinks, gas money, workshops, printing, etc. If you like a zine you see, always ask the person behind the counter what they want for it.
And: the open table is not part of the library, although it might look just as colourful and mixed up.
As you see, we are assuming that the lost zines are due to a blunder. If, on the other hand, you stole some zines on purpose, maybe for political or other reasons, we are looking forward to your written claims of responsibility contact@zinefestberlin.com.
A theft-protected and additionally super self-made alternative to the open zinetable are the portable tables which some people were carrying around at zinefest this year. With these you can always have an eye on your zines and you don’t need your fixed table. Maybe you have even more ideas for some self-made alternatives.
Smells Like Zine Spirit
We are very happy that a lot of you had a swell time at the zinefest, however, from the rooms in the back there has been some dissatisfaction. Some people reported, that the rooms were smelly and uncomfortable and that very few people actually had a look at them. To improve that situation, we could imagine some comfy seats and maybe some cozy lighting in the backrooms too, not only on the main-room “stage”. A genius way to prevent smelly air is replacing it with fresh one, which is provided by the outside world, easily accessible by opening a window or two once in a while.
To make the rooms as cozy as possible, you can provide blankets, lamps, pillows or carpets too next year. Every year we start build up and decorate on Friday before the fest and you are very welcome to join us. Another idea we are thinking about for quite a while now is thematically sorted areas in the rooms. Then you might have more in common with your table-neighbours and visitors could specifically choose the areas they are interested in. What do you think about that and do you have more ideas? We hope, these minor missteps haven’t been too inconvenient for you and we’re happy you have all been here and made the fest what it was.

We can’t believe that it’s over! (And yes, it took us more than a month to recover ;)) Thanks to everyone who made it possible: the over 60 tables-holders, all the involved workshop-holders, the volunteers that helped running the space, the bar, the info-table, our big craft area and cleaning up after the hundreds of visitors left on Sunday night.
