typography

Saturday, Nov 8th, 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.:
foxitalic
GER, ENG
in this short typography 101 we will examine different kinds of typefaces and learn how to use and combine them. some of the general typography “rules” (which we can choose to follow or not!) of course also apply to hand-written text. if you are using letters to express something, this talk is for you! i’m offering the talk in german but will try and brush up on my english typography vocabulary.
Samstag, 8. Nov, 16:30 – 17:30:

Zinefest #4: Organisator_innen gesucht / call for organizers

Kommt vorbei!

organize-all-the-things

Greetings from the cave of our berlin homes- the sun is shining again, flowers are blooming and the sweet smell of copy machines is in the air again. Zinefest Berlin is on our minds! We’ve had our first plenum of the season, and sadly almost all of the organizing team is unavailable to help this year. So right now, the capacity of what zinefest will be is painfully small…

But wait- There’s hope! You can help organize! Every year we invite new members to join us, but this year is particularly important. Do you want to see another fun-filled zinefest? Please join us!
Never organized before? That’s okay- neither did any of us really before we started the zinefest berlin. So don’t be shy now.

We will have a new-organizers meeting on Friday, 25. April at 19:00. For the address, please write to contact@zinefestberlin.com Can’t make it? write us anyway! We will invite you to the next one.

At this meeting we will do an introduction round, discuss the current situation with zinefest, what roles need to be filled, and you can suggest ideas for what you’d like to see happen or how it can be done differently. Zinefest Berlin is a DIY event, so if you wanna see something happen, come
on down and do it!

Feedback and Stats

One Month after Zinefest we finally made it through our emails, notes and the feedback box. Thank you all for being there and the all in all nice feedback we got!

Changes that people suggested for during Zinefest: child care/a kid’s room, a copying machine at the fest and no alcohol serving (in case dry alcoholics and/or people who want to quit prefer an non-alcoholic event).
Prior to the event someone suggested we upload a pdf with our flyers to the website.
Regarding the date people pointed out that one often has no money left at the end of the month, so an earlier date would be better. Also some people think closing at 8 p.m. is too early.

We can’t tell yet how many and which of the things you suggested we will change. But if you’re eager to help with one of them, contact us and join the orga team!

As always we also can’t tell how many visitors we had but it’s pretty obvious there is not much room for growth. On sunday we counted 447 donating visitors. On saturday we counted even more … but then we misplaced our notes.

And here are some blogposts that visitors wrote about this year’s Zinefest:

Call for Food

vokuAnyone else still out there with some spare time Oct. 26-27? It’s getting closer to Zinefest and we’ll need plenty of help with everything from greeting visitors to managing the fun at the afterparty! Please let us know if you have any time as soon as possible, we are eternally thankful and can’t do without our volunteers! volunteers@zinefestberlin.com
AND we are also searching for a Vokü group for Sunday! We want to have food available during both days, to satisfy our bodies’ physical hunger that zines alone unfortunately don’t have the capacity to do. So we are asking you, people of zinefest: Can you imagine you and your friends getting together, to cook a big meal for at least 250 people? Do you have a contact to a vokü group? Could you ask them? Whoever cooks the voku would get to keep all the money they made. We can organize the transport- can you organize the nutrients?
If you are interested or have questions about the details, please write to us at: contact [at] zinefestberlin [dot] com

Date: Thursday 10 October, 2013. 20:00, at Rote Insel (Mansteinstr. 10, S/U Yorkstr.)

Solidarity vokü for post-trauma support and care.
Evening theme: Zines! To get excited for the upcoming 3rd annual Zine Fest Berlin (26-27 Oct) we’ll watch the documentary, $100 and a T-Shirt (USA/ 2004, directed by Joe Biel) “A cultural analysis of what causes zine makers to tick; what the hell zines are, why people make zines, the origin of zines, the resources and community available for zine makers, and the future of zines. Interviews with about 70 zine makers, ex-zine makers, and readers from the northwest. Featuring footage of the Portland Zine Symposium, other zine related events, and activities bringing zine culture to life. The video sparks untapped creativity and new interest into zine making and reading.”
There will also be zines available from berlin-based Raumschiff Distro. Come learn about zines and support refugees! Vokü starts at 20:00, film at 21:00
